Ukrainian National Honoured Academic Folk Chorus named G. Veryovka. Vesnyankas from Different Regions of Ukraine. Expedition Records. | | Track Reviews (0) |

|
Ternopil, Vinnytsya, Zakarpattya, Chernigiv, Rivne regions – here is the geography of expedition records from funds of Veryovka Choir represented here. These records were made by Vasyl and Maria Pylypchak during 1980-2007 – and there even are songs of Ukrainian migrants from Poland. However, this is not the main thing. And the main thing is the theme of this collection. Spring as such has its own powerful magic – this, we believe, everybody has noticed. And, thus, folk songs of spring ceremonies are charged with this energy up to the top – to feel this, one only needs to listen to one vesnyanka, any. Well, and here there are more than thirty of them, so different, so beautiful and strong, so – real... And the issue is even not that the disc represents exactly authentic performance – the issue is about the words: listen to them attentively. These are formulas in which life and death, sorrow and joy of not just a person – of the entire universe – are encoded... As the disc contains field recordings – clear, not all of the tracks can boast their high quality, and we should warn you about it. However, we have decided to offer this material on the web site, as it, sure, will be interesting for lots of fans of the Ukrainian song.

The group is experienced and high-quality, it has been existing since 1991, it tours quite a lot – but the two-disc collection that you now see is the first official album by the ensemble. Well, this is the case when it is better late than never – because these musicians are worth knowing.

Rivne Polissya still preserves a significant number of archaic features in the material and spiritual culture and is characterized by conservatism and remainders of pre-Christian beliefs, ancient customs, world view and visions of the Ukrainian people. The folklore tradition of this region was formed in difficult historical condition...

On the whole, the album, I think, can create quite an integral feeling about the culture of Polischuks – the more so that here, in addition to ceremonial and domestic songs, quite a bit of humorous refrains can be found. And it means that the impression will not be one-sided.

You can easily imagine wrinkles around eyes, work-weary hands and skin darkened of the sun. Simple, warm and dry music of singing – like wrinkles or work-weary hands. It is difficult to explain or to describe these voices, but for me they seem to shine. So quietly.

Three main categories of professional musicians are presented at this disc. Travelling singers – lyre players, and later – concertina players. Then shepherds – in old times they performed signal and magic music. And, at last, troyisti muzyky, who feel themselves well even in our time.

Pidlyashshya is a south-western region of Ukraine situated at the border, so naturally its culture is influenced by close neighbours – Belarus and Poland. In those parts along with usual songs you may also hear spiritual songs, Russian romances and songs, which once used to be Polish, but now have already become Ukrainian.
