The Dmytro Bortnianskyi Ñhamber Ñhoir. The Choral Frescoes Of Sivershchyna. | | Track Reviews (5) |
|
|
It is quite natural that the compositions of Dmytro Bortnyanskiy are performed by this choir. Still, within almost ten years of its existence, the repertoire of this choir has become so big and diverse, that, as connoisseurs claim, it is difficult to restrict it with certain frames. Not only academic, but also modern performance turned out to be easy for them. May be, that’s the very reason why in 2002 this choir won the Grand Prix at the international festival-contest of chamber choirs. During nearly one hour and a half you may hear not only the compositions of Bortnyanskiy, Lentovich and Rachmaninov, but also of Shamo, Kern, Zhene and Rossini. To crown it all, some spirituals are recorded at this disc as well. Still, the repertoire is quite a different thing. What is really the first thing, it is the voices. They sound proper, harmonious, strong and tender. In connection with this I will mention that the recording presented here is not made in a studio, but in a concert hall. It is alive. Still, it is listened to practically a studio one. It is clear.

This CD represents 11 choral works which undoubtedly could be called the masterpieces of the Ukrainian choral baroque. The sacred music of so-called baroque-period is the highest achievement of Ukrainian musical heritage which reflects revival of creative forces of the Ukrainian people at the latter half of the 17th century and the early 18th century.

Berezovsky and Vedel. Two identically unattainable high peaks. One of the most prominent composers of the 18th century, whose name is written in golden letters in the history of music, and the ascetic singer of prayers, whose name warms with its golden radiance orthodox cathedrals all over the earth...

It seems to me that these voices are quite able to fill music they perform with spirituality regardless of what style it belongs to – at least, if only they preserve the manner characteristic of the choir. Because, in the end, behind the great beauty there stands no less great internal force, which it is easy to feel.

For all those who have no need for audio discs but do have the need for sacred music that sounds at home, not in a church – this disc will become just a wonderful acquisition. First, these are, as you can see, five albums on one disc. But number not always can say anything about quality, of course. Thus, secondly – have a look at the performers whose albums have been included here.

Singing of Lavra monks attracts even people far from orthodoxy – they come to listen to it because real beauty never tolerates limitations. The four albums represented on this disc (the fifth one is rather a collection, though not less beautiful) – are only a small part, certainly. Nevertheless, they are, probably, among the best ones – however, make sure yourself.

This CD is everything I expected and much more. Incredibly beautiful and filled with majestic, ethereal, and incredibly melodic a capella singing. Nearly all my life I have sung in my small Church Choir, and although I do not understand Ukrainian this CD is filled with all kinds of delights to ones ears of beautiful Church music.

A great recording of a very good chamber choir! I enjoyed the variety of composers and styles represented here, and the addition of some spirituals was a nice surprise.

Excellent recording, but I do not care much for the avant-guard liturgical music of L Dychko. It sounds like liturgicall jazz sung by the Irish group Clannad. Nothing beats Bortnyansky, Vedel, and other classical Ukrainian liturgical composers.
