It amazes at times how finely the Ukrainian folk songs are blended in with the jazz ideas by ShockolaD. Leaving aside the technique there, after all, any tune can be set for jazz, if there’s a will. Let’s pay attention to, as it were, arrangement aesthetics. ShockolaD may have limited itself to some hints at the source turning these songs into a riff with their complete mastery of performing. But the group changes the type of tune very neatly, and, at some extent, they rather add to it than change. It may somewhat confine the space for external developments, though as a result, the musicians keep closer to the main canvas streaming deep their fantasy that comes out newly tinted, with reflections of mastership, facets of source songs – all these needing true consideration, and it is present here. Very likely it is due to less pronounced bass and percussions in this album that come to produce an expressive and strong groove. Keyboards and brass fly clear, emotionally, and rich, with the vocal brining in feelings and drive. Briefly to mention 2, 10, and 12 tracks of the album to be true jazz romances, a kind of a city folk of a new age. These songs nicely blended with a whole picture of Pokosy promising to be a step forward of the group. All in all, it shows to be an interesting drift, doesn’t it? Anton Jozhik Leyba (Hedgehog) Ihor Hnydyn - drums Anastasija Litvinuk - piano, fender rhodes Dana Vynnytska - vocal Sergij Brydun - bass Volodymyr Urban - alt, sax

..from the first seconds the strong stream of jazz-rock and fusion strikes – the Latin American component is first completely hidden. It emerges gradually, as if the balance is leveled – but folk-rock waves in the spirit of Jethro Tull also emerge, and then gestures toward the ambient and the Scandinavian electronic jazz, and that's far from being all ...

..despite the Oriental sophistication of the melodies and intricacy of the rhythms – it is very European music, in fact. And it is not so much about the jazz vein, rather about the ability to avoid the superfluous, which, with such richness and emotional intensity of the music, is a true feat.

Very transparent, juicy, quiet and confident and yet full of irrepressible life – this is what this work appears like. Stylistically, it continues the trend including the albums "Black" and "Red" – the pure jazz-rock line, with no direct immersions into the lounge or symphonicity. But in a much softer, tender version.

To enrich them with modern colors without destroying the subtle paths of the light joy inherent in Christmas carols and shchedrivkas – which is not an easy task. Since it requires great attention and tolerance. Finally, it just requires love for this music, for the roots – and love that is creative. And it seems – they have succeeded.

In its previous album "Pokosy", ShockolaD stepped away from jazz for an almost safe distance – the key definition of the work would be "ethno-lounge". Well, and this time the group seems to have decided to remix all familiar ingredients – both the ethno, and jazz, and acoustic lounge – and, sure, to season it with a few new colors.

Victor Solomin is virtually the only jazz domra-player in Ukraine, therefore the both of his ethno-jazz projects – "SolominBand" and "DomRa" – have here no immediate analogues just by definition. Besides, "DomRa" can boast two key instruments at once: those are the domra and the vocal, and it is they that provide the "ethnic component" of the sounding here.

"Kolomyikas" is a good album with bright pieces that are able to capture the audience as it is, even without associations with the material it derives from. In the end, there was no "weak link" in the team of the album’s creators. That is, probably, the reason why, without regard to the intense structure, there is within the music fabric – freedom, which makes it possible to breathe deeply.

Even today not too much of such music is being created in Ukraine – to say nothing about the middle of the last century.. Igor Khoma managed to involve really wonderful musicians into his band – the rhythm sections, the winds, the strings and the keys in various plays pleasantly surprise. But still the most striking thing is the authentic Ukrainian spirit of the music represented here.

If we begin from the end, we could do it so: this is a wonderful, heartfelt, clear, high-quality album – and at present this is the best album in the reserve of Anno Domini. All previous experience, all best qualities acquired new depth here, started shining with new colors. And if we begin from the beginning...

Yes, in this music you can still hear well the hot southern sun – but still, on the foreground, you have original cool elegance. And one can feel based on which law the space of the disc is designed: rather not to satiate, but to extend this space as much as possible – but softly.

...the album at once creates elated, festive mood – but in a surprising way. In the correct way. Because, although about a half of the compositions can hardly be called merry ones – a smile is very expressly felt in them. Somewhere dim, somewhere transparent, somewhere dreamy, somewhere thoughtful – but it is present in each piece, and it warms.

It seems to me that none who has at least once heard performance by Motion Trio – and the more so none who has seen it – will ever forget, mix it up with anybody. And the thing is not only original composition – although you will hardly find among performers of jazz, art rock, folk fusion another trio what would consist exceptionally of accordions.

Sure, Er. J. Orchestra is one of the most interesting Ukrainian projects in the domain of ethno-fusion today. And not only Ukrainian ones. Actually, this music is so organically intertwined into the world sound fabric – it is impossible to limit it with any borders, geographic or stylistic, etc.

It is for sure that Er. J. Orchestra today is one of the most interesting Ukrainian ethno-jazz projects. This album collects absolutely different streams around its center - but has no that center inside of itself. The center is inside of you, listener.

It is great pleasure – to listen to music that has let in, changed, satiated and breathed out so many bright impressions, lives, root... When music is wide open – everybody can drink from it, see one's face in it, find in its one's real.

After hearing "Number One", I wanted more of the same. This CD is not more of the same. It is very different; much more rocking, there is sax instead of trumpet, the vocals are more pronounced yet still absolutely beautiful, the bass is driving and exciting... In short, I love this CD as much as the other one, but for very different reasons.
Tonight I played both CDs for the Jazz music director of our radio station, WRUV-FM. He loved them both as well. ShockolaD is a World class band and should tour the World. Ukraine rocks!
