"The figure of Oleh Kandyba (Olzhych) is considered a symbol of an entire generation of the Ukrainian youth that came into the arena of life in the 1920s-1930s and sincerely and unreservedly dedicated themselves to the Ukrainian idea and fight for restoration of the independent Ukrainian state. Researchers in Europe and in the U.S. knew the archaeologist, Dr. Kandyba. Some admired poems by O.Olzhych, while comrades in the struggle for the free Ukraine addressed him differently: "Idealist", "Doctor". However, he always signed his research works in the same manner: O. Kandyba. At the age of 23 he defended his PhD dissertation, was a member of international expeditions, the author of around fifty publications, promoter of archaeological discoveries, including those in Ukraine. While in America, in 1938 he participated in founding the Ukrainian Research Institute in the U.S. and compiled the first collection of its research works, the publication of which he arranged in Prague in 1939. This was the last year when Olzhych acted as an archaeologist. World War II began – life made him become a politician and soldier..." Research and popular publication. In Ukrainian. On the basis of studying the original text of "Pacts and Constitutions of Laws and Liberties of the Zaporizhzhya Cossack Army..." of 1710, the author proves that its authors relied on the antique, late Middle-Ages and early modern political and legal traditions, thus using ideas of lots of European thinkers.

How is it possible to unite two seemingly non-combinable historic truths: the truth of the winner and the truth of the one who lost? Can one really assess the revolution events in Ukraine that were unwinding in the middle 17th century and Mazepa uprising only within the limits of one truth? We hope that you will find answers to these complex issues in this book.

In the historical investigation, the reader will encounter not just the legendary hetman Ivan Mazepa, but the far not cognized, though the most interesting, maximally close to reality image of the great hetman.
