"Till now not many people know that after the seizure of Ukraine by bolshevists the so-called Kholodny Yar republic appeared in Cherkasy region, which under the yellow-and-blue flag conducted armed struggle up to the mid-1920s! "Kholodny Yar" is memoirs exactly about it. The author, an indefatigable romanticist, recalls the events that it is sometimes difficult to believe they could be real. For among our visions of the 1920s, one would hardly find a space for the picture, where the tablet "Kholodny Yar Domain. No Trespass for CheKa Officers!" would hang under dozens of skulls beaded on a tree. Therefore, it is no surprise, that in the Soviet Union the people who had read these memoirs were under KGB supervision. "Kholodny Yar" is one of those books that, without noticing it, one could read through over one night, a true bestseller with the 70-year old history! Collective reading of the book used to be organized in "Prosvita"'s, names of its characters were adopted as pseudonyms by young OUN members. One could say without exaggerating that Yuri Horlis-Horsky became an idol of thousands of Ukrainian patriots."
