Yuri Zdorenko & Hash. P’janyy shanson abo Trokhy viski. (EP). /digi-pack/. (Drunk Chanson or a Bit of Whisky) | | Track Reviews (2) |
|
|
Yury Zdorenko told in one of his interviews that hash was an Armenian dish, which very efficiently helped to overcome hangover, and it was exactly from a culinary book that he had taken the name for his new group; besides, if we go back to English slang, this word can also mean a "fight", "mincing machine". Well, and let us mention as chance offers (but without comments) that in that same slang a "hash" may also mean "cash". And what about such synonym as "bullshit"? Thus, the name appeared surprisingly polysemantic – while the new project by Zdorenko could hardly be referred to as monosemantic either. On the one hand – the drive to which everybody has got used to due to "Borsch", but at a bit different angle. On the other – the careful arrangement of the music: there is now less of the punk roughness, while a strange "fashionable" gloss has appeared there instead. On the third – Zdorenko in his texts does not step back from the previously invented recipe: merging of the comical and marginal. All of that together really reminds a strange energizing drink – and there is nothing more left to do but to regret that now "Hash" performs not that frequently. Judging by this mini-album, there will be no indifferent or languid listeners at concerts by Zdorenko and Co)

The performance concert by Oleh Skrypka and Les Podervyansky "Humanists" took place in December, 2000. Actually, 10 years after, in January, 2011, the performance got a new life... This recording is the case of an exclusive creative collaboration of two personalities significant for the modern Ukrainian culture.

This recording is the case of an exclusive creative collaboration of two personalities significant for the modern Ukrainian culture. It is a pity that Les Podervyansky does not sing here. Instead, Oleh Skrypka actively participates in duping the plays, and this creates an additional comic and grotesque effect.. Published for the first time.

During the recent years, Gogol Bordello has become, probably, one of the most popular eccentric bands in the entire world – while it plays not quite, so to speak, commercial music. Though, on the other hand, in these songs so much is mixed that the definition "gipsy ska-punk" does not convey even a half of it...

Possibly, Andrukhovych did not exaggerate too much when he said that he did not expect any significant external resonance from his work with Karbido – he just had a lot of fun in the process. But sells-out during the whole "cinnamon" tour – are already a fact, and a pleasant one. Because it proves once again that the "underground" in the today's culture is not dust-covered nooks of outsider...

Yuriy Zdorenko & Hash spin up – and in quite an unexpected way. Actually, what could seem after release of their debut mini-album? That Zdorenko decided to cook another poignantly hot dish based on the recipe tested in the "Borsch" project. And what actually turns out?

As far as we know – this is the first album in Ukraine (at least, among officially released ones) dedicated to bikers. Dedicated not only formally, but also thematically. However, the disc "Biker Sich" has been released just recently – but it was a collection of favorite songs, not the author's dedication album. A significant difference.

...the trademark self-irony is still there. To make sure – the first song from the album will be enough. Though, indeed, the rest of the songs also meet this sort of a definition: irony plus clownery. Need I say that both the first and second are not limited to smiles and jokes, subtle and not too subtle?

Flyzzza is a very bright example of that people do not change, they just become deeper, wider, more precisely tuned. And if your true nature is being positive – in the course of time, there becomes only more of it. Anyway, Flyzzza manages to not just go in this direction – to literally fly, touching the ground only with smile-heel...

It is very cool that Antin Muharsky has not abandoned his field research of rural glamour in the Ukrainian context. Moreover – it seems that he has decided to undertake for this good cause a real family contract. But the main thing is that Muharsky has again succeeded in adding to the dozen of songs of the album a double portion of positive pepper..

Siryk B.A.N.D. is as though the voice of such metropolis in which everything is mixed up but has not got lost. So, elements of synth-pop, hip-hop, psychedelics, punk, ethnic hints coexist incredibly harmoniously – one should have truly impartial views in order that this kind of mixtures sounded qualitatively. They have them.

Actually, once such songs were characteristic of only one country in the world – but since then the Earth has become considerably more rounded. Consequently, maybe, there is nothing strange in that we observe appearance of sheer Ukrainian songs in the country style. In the end, we have appropriate landscape...

...In other words, it is high-quality, deliciously cooked, clever and good-natured banter – whatever you might say, that is a rare phenomenon. That is, we know how to laugh, but with a light heart – there we not always succeed, right?..
