The third studio album by the group DakhaBrakha is again some different quality level both in content and in form. In the end, currently the group is one of the best representatives of the Ukrainian variant of world music – recognized not only in Ukraine but also in lots of other countries of the world. And it seems that a good opportunity for a sort of leisure and experiments has arisen – the new work significantly differs from all previous ones, even though the handwriting of DakhaBrakha is, certainly, easily recognizable in any case. You can see yourself that the title of the album can be interpreted both as "illuminated", and as "easy-going", and not only. In the same way, the content of the album in the style aspect is ambiguous – but, definitely, interesting. This time to their branded ethno-chaos they have added quite a bit of very diverse elements: here you have soul, and D'n'B, and hip-hop, and art-rock, and almost jazz decorations. Obviously, this is the merit of not only the musicians of the group, but also Yury Hustochka ( Esthetic Education, Piss&Laugh, ex- Okean Elzy) – because he became the sound producer of the album. It appears cool. Because the paints are laid with the fantasy and span of a master, not an apprentice. Because every new song turns into an ironical cultural collage, where, as in any ordinary magic mirror, it is possible to see not only oneself, but also truthful features of the outside world, its soul. And sometimes – even feel vibrations of the spirit engrained so deeply (or so extensively as well?) that national and political frontiers absolutely lose their sense...

The concert performance – it is different, and not only due to presence of a new song. The sound, nuances of arrangements, team of musicians – but, above all – the energy. And this is the case when, even while just listening to the recording, you experience a kind of happening – not least due to Jamala's affection for gospel.

The new album by Boombox is another very significant reason to mention the year 2011 as one of the most yielding years for the non-ordinary Ukrainian popular music. No doubt – despite the title, "Middle Age", no crisis is in question here. On the contrary.

Jamala – and the debut album illustrates this very nicely – creates light music in the best Western tradition. And not just coolly – at a high quality level. Her love for soul, funk, jazz, burlesque and even classical music – it's all here, in this music so many things are mixed that you cannot guess everything at once...

It seems to me it is just not possible to listen to them – and not to imagine some stories. Very different – and identically bright. And the main thing is the absolute sincerity, which you feel literally in every sound of the music, in every intonation of Nata Smirina's voice. This is as though you wake up on the first morning of the Indian summer – and, willy-nilly, it catches your breath...

Fortunately, sometimes you run across the albums about which it is very difficult to say anything – because you just frankly like them. Because, in spite of external simplicity, they contain so many ideas, various subtleties – one's ears just go astray..) Because the music tells you stories without words, while the words tell you stories full to the brims with music..

It would seem – just vocal and the piano. But this only verbally looks rather ascetic – in actual fact, a surprisingly powerful emotional current lives inside there. Actually, the way the voice and the piano sound – makes Hanna Brizhata, aka Anniebri, a truly unordinary phenomenon on our scene. Honestly speaking, I can hardly think about a single Ukrainian album resembling "Lo-Fi Feeling"...

In spite of that “At Night” compositions do not meet the pop-format, the album is aimed at mass audience. The name, voice and the specific, characteristic of only Svyatoslav Vakarchuk melodics of the compositions will help fans of Ukrainian music become acquainted with new music forms, to seize new music territories.

If we begin from the end, we could do it so: this is a wonderful, heartfelt, clear, high-quality album – and at present this is the best album in the reserve of Anno Domini. All previous experience, all best qualities acquired new depth here, started shining with new colors. And if we begin from the beginning...

...with their own example the group perfectly demonstrates that serious sense of humor can lead far enough. It has already brought Sontseklyosh to a very tight concert schedule, wide recognition in not that really narrow circles, and now – to the second album as well. The album, believe me, is cool...

The familiar melodies will arise in an updated, sometimes unexpected form, unknown ones will have a chance not to be forgotten. Folk songs in the style of Mad Heads XL, the sound is based on modern ska-punk without clear style limits. Positive, good moods and frantic drive – all the best from Mad Heads XL now in folk songs!

"Integro" sounds very prudent, balanced – there is something special that makes it an album, and a strong one, not a collection of colorful pictures. As a flower that suddenly opens up in the middle of the night and – darkness becomes transparent, the air – cool and fragrant, and thoughts – pure...

In its previous album "Pokosy", ShockolaD stepped away from jazz for an almost safe distance – the key definition of the work would be "ethno-lounge". Well, and this time the group seems to have decided to remix all familiar ingredients – both the ethno, and jazz, and acoustic lounge – and, sure, to season it with a few new colors.

On the one hand, everything is simple – it contains both a rich instrumental component, and the ethno-jazz-rock mixture with the psychedelic aftertaste, and, certainly, the magic seasoning of ancient language. On the other hand – everything is also simple: the soul was invested here, one can hear this – and, maybe, that is why the music penetrates so deeply...

...the album "Free" resembles that very puzzle, an element of mosaics that was lacking in order that the picture became integral, completed. It – disregarding, let me repeat it, the status of the debut one – seems to sum up some results, outline the visible and known space and, thus, free space for a step forward.

Is the studio version different from the concert one? No doubt. Without disclosing all secrets, it is enough to say that it remains up to date to go beyond one language and one culture. In my opinion, the album represents the Ukrainian music, but the music which is done by the new generation. It is the product of the new world. The entire world.

First I listened to the Ojra’s records somewhere at the end of 90-ties, yet then it was the attempt to join the archaic and the up-to-date. The staff of the group changed several times since then, and they didn’t give up to search. Of course, a variety of creative paths they made gave its outcome: one of the best, I think, neo-folk records of all Ukrainian discography of the recent years.

..here, "On the Verge" – the force of water is revealed very perceptibly, magic of quite a different level appears, intended for other purposes. That is, the first works were just to burn everything old, not able to live on – to clear the space. The new work – must feed the new, fresh relying on those roots that did not subdue to the action of fire. That verge from which creation of the new myth..

In its foundation, the idea was simpler and defined as "ethno-cabaret" – that is, folk songs decorated with a music mix from any sorts of styles. Conditionally speaking, from northern dub to oriental blues. And as a result they conducted skilful retro-styling for NEP times (the New Economic Policy), that is for around the 1920s. And what appeared then – was a bomb.

Dakha Brakha were a highlight of Womadelaide (Australia) earlier this year for me. This album is fantastic. It lights me up with passion, intensity, wildness and wonder. My idea of how wide the possibilities of music are has been expanded by listening to, and seeing them. Makes me want to go to Kiev!

Dakhabrakha in good form for their third studio album. Still as original and surprising as ever, but showing an even greater range of influences than before. These include modern urban black genres, which have been absorbed and transmuted into something truly different and fun.
For me, though, the standout tack is the last one on the album - Buvayte zdorovi - which I can put on a loop and listen to for hours on end.
Buy it or miss out.
