This series sets the goal of creating a sort of a reference book of Ukrainian jazz musicians – grouping them by spheres of professionalization. Actually, the first disc of the new series is focused on the bass – both the bass guitar and the contrabass. At that, this time these are already studio, not concert recordings.

..this evening interesting and even to some extent unexpected "specialized" combinations popped up unexpectedly – as, for example, the bass guitar plus contrabass, the acoustic bass plus the 8-string one, and so on, to say nothing about the last performance of the concert – a piece performed by all bass musicians involved.

VSH-Ensemble can be considered a temporary concert project, a sort of a gamble. However, in view of the quality of the music material represented here, one would like to believe that activity of the project will not be ended thereon – in the end, as they say, it is temporary things that last the longest... At all events, it seems that "Acid Menu" has succeeded for one hundred percent.

During the Guitar Kolo concert, the main tone was set by fusion – but on the studio collection it does not really strike the eye. And that is for good – because every retreat from a general direction looks even brighter then. And here you, in fact, have enough of such retreats.

It happened so that I did not attend this concert – and the very first two plays from the disc made me feel sorry about that. Jazz-fusion in various displays, for every participant has his own vision of this style – is really an interesting thing, especially when played well. And with that everybody coped, you would not even dare to say who on that evening sounded more poignantly.

Another volume of the audio reference book by the "Jazz Kolo" project is, as you see, focused on masters of drumkit playing. It is nice to see that this time there again appears so much material that the compilers did not manage to squeeze everything into one disc. It is nice to see that there is enough space both for "veterans" of the Ukrainian jazz, and for the absolutely young generation..

Our best drummers are so different from each other and create such different music that it just makes one happy. And this diversity, it seems, in some paradoxical way results in that the main characters of this concert virtually do not compete with each other – everybody does something own, special indeed.

Season 2007 was opened and closed with performances by, actually, Igor Zakus with Z-Band – and the both concerts have now become constituent parts of this series. At closing of the season, an absolutely new program sounded – "Kolomyiky". Well, and the program "Zakus Was Here" sounded during the opening, and it is it that you are going to hear here.

The quartet of Danyl Zverkhanovsky – a student of Volodymyr Shabaltas – performed in the first part of this concert. The second part of the concert is performance by the renowned jazz masters: Pavlo Shepeta Trio includes, besides him, Maks Gladetsky and Valery Volkov.

It sounds as very delicate, intelligent combination of clear feelings and attentive reflections. All through the time while the disc sounds, one has the haunting feeling that the musicians realize themselves and the space around literally at every second – and are able to instantly react to its every motion, because they have inside a full degree of freedom and mastery.

All the musicians appear in some new, specific and delicate light - and, I believe, this is a merit of Lebedeva as a composer. It is not by chance that Igor Zakus at the beginning of the evening referred to her music as very female one... Expressive – and soft, caring; elegant, distinct – and, at the same time, very emotional, open to intercourse; sometimes anxious – and very lyrical...

..two concerts took place on that evening in actual fact – and those performances were so different that almost no temptation even arises to compare them with each other. But another thing is always the main one: whether the musicians succeed in revealing themselves in music – and, thus, revealing the audience with the music. And here, presumably, there will be no objections: all of that – happened!

From pop-music to avant-garde, with a number of bright tints between these two extremities – besides, truly lots of very young musicians are represented here. ..and the studio recording Piano Kolo is a wonderful illustration of that Ukrainian jazz not just lives, but also develops smartly and interestingly.

..the quality and volume of the material represented inspired organizers for a rather decisive step: this concert of the project has become the first one released in the two-disc format – because, according to Igor Zakus, it was just impossible to give up any of the plays represented here for the sake of squeezing into the format of one disc.

In contrast to the previous season, when each concert of the series was a performance of some concrete collective, in the new season the concerts are organized round some concrete instrument. Accordingly, saxophonists were involved into this concert – seven from among the best ones.

I'm so glad that Ukrainian saxophonists became the next to contribute to our Jazz-Kolo's compilation/anthology CD series. As well as it was supposed to be, this CD presents variety of styles and approaches, which can be found in Ukrainian jazz. We didn't mean to be absolutely "objective" but our goal is that all the saxophonists are different from each other, and that any listener can find music for his/her taste.
